Michael Barber, Saint Louis University: The tape "Alfred Schutz: Philosopher of Science in the 20th Century" provides a superb introduction to the life and thought of Alfred Schutz. It offers a clear and condensed summary of his works and presents the various phases of his life with pictures of his family, friends, life-settings and with taped testimonials to Schutz from friends. It even includes a taped summary by Schutz himself on his own philosophical contribution.
Roger Koppl, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Department of Economics and Finance: Professor Embree is to be congratulated for assembling a superb introduction to the life and works of Alfred Schutz. The video vividly conveys the drama of the historical moment when Schutz came to his system. The relationship of Schutz's work to the broader currents of Viennese intellectual life was deftly drawn. The viewer is drawn into the story by an engaging account of Schutz's life and his flight from Nazi oppression. The very abstract ideas of Alfred Schutz are given a compelling human face. Too often the phenomenology of society is presented as an imposing and obscure study. Embree's video conveys the essential outlines of Schutz's theory straightforwardly and with admirable clarity. Students will be informed by the video and inspired to read Schutz with energy and attention. The video's excitement about Schutz's ideas is quite infectious. The interviews with Schutz's colleagues and family are very interesting and informative. Economists may be surprised to learn just how much Schutz was influenced by the Viennese economists with whom he was associated. The tape reveals just how close Schutz was to the Austrian school of economics. This connection helps to explain the recently emergent view of Schutz as a rational choice theorist. It is an altogether worthy effort and a boon to any educator wishing to teach Schutz in his classes. I recommend it highly.

Lerner, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Secretary, Círculo Latinoamericano de Fenomenología (CLAFEN): Luego de una absurda tendencia a la especialización desde la época moderna --aunada a un aislamiento entre las disciplinas acentuado por el imperio del positivismo decimonónico-- recién en nuestra época, desde los últimos años del siglo XX, las tendencias interdisciplinarias comienzan a apreciarse en la investigación académica y científica. Lester Embree se ha esforzado en el video “Alfred Schutz: Filósofo de la Ciencia en el siglo XX”, no sólo por mostrar la perfecta armonía entre la integridad moral de este excepcional judío-austríaco (1899-1959) en su vida y actividades familiar o empresariales y su intensa actividad intelectual, sino la clarividencia de un académico que desde muy joven fue extraordinario y precoz ejemplo de la “transdisciplinariedad”. Quizás en vistas de estas virtudes nuestra época esté hoy más propicia a aprovechar el aporte de la poderosa inteligencia de Schutz, que descolló en cuanto campo despertara su interés: desde la filosofía del derecho, la economía, las ciencias sociales, la epistemología hasta otros ámbitos de la ciencia y de la cultura, pasando por la pintura y la música. Schutz no fue simplemente un “enciclopedista”, interesado en múltiples disciplinas, sino un auténtico filósofo, es decir, concernido por la fundación de las distintas disciplinas en las profundas raíces humanas, subjetivas, de toda dimensión del sentido, especialmente de la acción. Seguimos a Schutz desde la Viena de su nacimiento, sus amistades e influencias tempranas (en el campo del derecho, la sociología, y la filosofía neokantiana o fenomenológica como la de Husserl), pasando por su exilio en Paris desde 1938, hasta su destino final en Nueva York, donde se inicia la segunda etapa de su vida intelectual. Este itinerario se halla inteligentemente entretejido con una pedagógica exposición de las ideas elementales de sus obras más relevantes, realizada por el mismo Embree. En su segunda patria lo vemos vinculado al New School de la Quinta Avenida --institución que acogía a intelectuales que huían del horror del nazismo--, en su reencuentro con la fenomenología europea luego de la guerra, y en su apertura a la naciente fenomenología latinoamericana. Aquí sigue causándonos admiración el modo cómo Schutz logró combinar dichas actividades con sus negocios y su labor política. El video es una magnífica invitación a la lectura y a la investigación seria. De allí que se aprecie especialmente también el que Embree incluya información de las distintas ediciones de la obra de Schutz, en su idioma de origen, y en sus distintas traducciones.

They appreciated first of all the "non-complicated" but very instructive way in which the Schutzian approach was presented. And, of course, they enjoyed the photos, the recollections by relatives and friends as well as the framing by historical documents and music, which, as they said, gave them and impression of the "man" Alfred Schutz and made his work, his personality and his social roots more comprehensive to them. I think, you can be proud of an excellent publication of a new "multimedia" type.

O enfoque dado aos diferentes momentos de sua vida, permite situar o contexto da origem e da evolução de seus escritos, contribuíndo para interrelacionar de modo claro as principais concepções da sua sociologia fenomenológica. É uma produção que pode despertar o interesse tanto de quem já leu suas obras - material para discussão, quanto de quem está começando a se aventurar em compreender uma "pessoa" como sujeito no mundo social - material didático.

Man wandert durch das Wein von Mises, Kelsens - und Mozarts, durch eine Stadt am Abgrund der Geschichte; man wirft einen Blick in Husserls strenge Schreibwelt am Rande des Schwartzwaldes, frei von Huttenzauber; man beruhrt Paris, wo sich in der Zwischenkriegzeit um Sartre und Merleau-Ponty so viel zusammenbraut; man findet sich wieder in der New School am Rande der Wallstreet, am Kreuzungspunkt verschiedener Sinnprovinzen. Der Emigranten-Freund Aron Gurwitsch grusst heruber von der Upper West Side. Ein Familiengeist breitet sich aus, fern aller provinziellen Nestwarme. Wir nehmen tiel an einer dieser vielen erzwungen Odysseen des ausgehenden Jahrhunderts. Auch Don Quichotte und Sancho Panza - "zwei Seelen, ach, in einer Brust" - geben sich ein Stelldichein: der eine allzu ideensuchtig, der andere allzu erdentuchtig. Der Waagbalken hebt und senkt sich zwischen Alter und Neuer Welt. Etwas vom Stranger, vom Ewigen Juden, bleibt. Zum Gluck, denn Ideen haben auch ihre Nicht-Orte.
